Bushfire Assistance

The effect of the Victorian bushfires has been felt right across the community, from families who have lost loved ones to the emergency services workers in affected areas.

The State Coroner has completed the identification of the 173 persons reported missing by the police to the coroner in the wake of the horror of the Black Saturday fires.

The Coroners Court of Victoria worked with a number of professionals and experts, such as Victoria Police and the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, to investigate the circumstances of these deaths.

Bushfire Legal Help Handbook now available

The Bushfire Legal Help Handbook—a guide to the law for people affected by the February 2009 Victorian bushfires—is now available online.

The handbook and a set of fact sheets are available on the new Bushfire Legal Help website.

The project is a result of a collaboration between staff from Victoria Legal Aid, the Public Interest Law Clearing House, the Law Institute of Victoria and members of the Federation of Community Legal Centres and the private profession. The Coroners Court of Victoria contributed to the development of the handbook.

The Bushfire Legal Help phone line operates on 1800 113 432 (Monday to Friday, 8.45am to 5.15pm).
