Interested Parties

To be an 'interested party' for the purpose of an inquest you must show the coroner that you have sufficient interest in the investigation.

Interested parties may include:

  • family members
  • employers
  • a doctor who treated the person who has died
  • anyone who has relevant information
  • a person who, in a coroner's opinion, may be involved in some way with the death or fire.

To become an interested party you must fill out an Application for Leave to Appear as Interested Party (form 31) and send it to the court. We will write back to you advising whether the coroner has granted your application.

The 'senior next of kin' is not required to fill out an application form.

If you are not an interested party, you may still be able to access information about an investigation by filling out an Access for Coronial Documents Inquest Transcript (form 45).

For further information about becoming an interested party contact the court 1300 309 519.
