Identification

One of the roles of the coroner is to confirm the identity of the person who has died.

To identify a loved one, you must be a family member or somebody who knew the person well at the time of their death.

Visual identifications are the most common way we establish the identify of a person who has died. Our court staff will support you through this process.

In some situations, we may use medical or scientific alternatives such as:

  • fingerprinting
  • examining dental records
  • the removal of blood, tissue or saliva for DNA comparisons.

We will discuss this with you if these procedures are required.

If you have further questions about the identification process contact us on 1300 309 519 and ask to speak to the Initial Investigations Office.
