Initial Investigations Office
The Initial Investigations Office (IIO) is the first point of contact after your loved one's death is reported to the Coroners Court of Victoria.
The IIO performs a significant and critical role for families during a distressing and difficult time.
Staff at the IIO will assist you with information regarding:
- viewings
- the identification process
- any medical examinations that may be required including a preliminary examination and/or an autopsy
- the release of the person in our care for the funeral
- any questions you may have in relation to the initial stages of the coroner’s investigation
- counselling support.
Staff at the IIO also provide information and support regarding reportable and reviewable deaths to police, funeral directors, treating medical experts and coroners during the initial stages of an investigation.
