Tissue Donation

The Coroners Court of Victoria can facilitate contact with the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria for families who would like to consider consenting to tissue donation.

Many ill or injured people can be helped by receiving a transplant from a person who has just died.

Tissue donation is different from organ donation, and the process does not interfere with the coronial investigation.

Types of tissue collected for transplantation includes heart valves, skin, bone and corneas (a part of the eye).

The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) manages the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria.

VIFM also undertakes all medical procedures required by a coroner for their investigation.

More detailed information about tissue donation is available by contacting VIFM on (03) 9684 4444 and asking to speak to the Donor Tissue Bank of Victoria.
