Legislation

The Coroners Court of Victoria, as it is today, was established on 1 November 2009 when the Coroners Act 2008 came into effect. This was the most significant reform of the Victorian coronial jurisdiction in 25 years and replaced the former State Coroner’s Office.

The Coroners Act 2008 requires the reporting of certain deaths, and establishes the Coroners Court of Victoria as a specialist inquisitorial court. It also provides powers to coroners to investigate some deaths and fires, and to contribute to the reduction of the number of preventable deaths and fires through investigation findings that may contain comments and recommendations.

The Coroners Act 2008 can be found on the Victorian Law Today Library.
