Coroner to investigate Campbellfield factory fire

Friday 5 April 2019

Victorian Coroner Darren Bracken will attend the large factory fire burning in Campbellfield this afternoon, to commence a coronial investigation into the blaze.

The Court received a request to investigate the fire from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade earlier today.

Following receipt of the request, Coroner Bracken instructed Victoria Police to compile a coronial brief.

The focus of the coronial investigation will be determined following receipt of the brief.

Under the Coroners Act 2008, a coroner investigating a fire must find, if possible, the cause and origin of the fire and the circumstances in which the fire occurred.

Coroners are also empowered by the Act to make recommendations to address any systemic issues which may be identified during the investigation.

As the investigation is ongoing, no further comment can be made at this time.
