Coroner seeks mobile phone and dashcam footage in death in police custody investigation

Victorian Coroner Audrey Jamieson is appealing for mobile phone or dashcam footage to assist the coronial investigation into a death in police custody in Brunswick on Friday 6 June 2025.

At approximately 9.40pm on Friday evening 6 June 2025, Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police and Fire Rescue Victoria attended the intersection of Albert Street and Sydney Road, Brunswick following reports of an erratic male who was running into oncoming traffic and associated events.  Shortly before the arrival of Victoria Police, a power outage resulted in the failure of the streetlights and traffic control signals in the area.

Due to the male’s erratic behaviour an interaction with Victoria Police and Fire Rescue Victoria occurred. The male was restrained and transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where his condition deteriorated and he passed away on 10 June 2025.

Body Worn Camera footage from one of the Police members shows a large number of vehicles driving through the intersection and a large number of pedestrian bystanders whilst the above events occurred.

The coronial investigation would be assisted by anyone with either mobile phone or dashcam footage of the above events providing it to the coroner to assist the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

A directions hearing will be held for the investigation at the Coroners Court of Victoria on 8 July 2025.
