Coroner seeks witnesses in fatal Preston crash case

Victorian Coroner Audrey Jamieson is appealing for witnesses to assist the coronial investigation into a fatal collision in Preston in February 2020.

Jonas Montealegre, 36, and Vaatoa Chang, 29, were being pursued by police when their Toyota Kluger collided with a truck at the intersection of Bell and High streets at approximately 10.00pm on Tuesday 4 February.

Mr Chang was found deceased in the driver’s seat, while Mr Montealegre died at the scene while being treated by Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

Her Honour is seeking the drivers of two vehicles that came into contact with the Toyota Kluger prior to the crash.

At 9.57pm, the Toyota Kluger was driving southbound on High Street, Preston near the intersection of Regent Street.

The Toyota Kluger crossed in front of two vehicles being driven northbound, however the drivers of these vehicles slowed down and then drove around the Toyota Kluger.

To date, Victoria Police have not been able to identify the drivers or occupants of these two vehicles.

To assist, Coroner Jamieson has released footage from the coronial brief. The footage shows the Toyota Kluger as it crosses into the path of the two northbound vehicles on High Street, Preston.
