Orders and Rulings
A coroner may make an order or ruling regarding an investigation, or during an inquest.
Orders and rulings are not written findings. They can include, but are not limited to:
- a non-publication order restricting the release or publication of some information
- a ruling to re-open an investigation
- a ruling on whether the coroner has jurisdiction to investigate.

| COR 2008 3154 | Baby Oscar | Non-Publication Order | Coroner Audrey Jamieson | Coroner Audrey Jamieson issued an interim non publication order during a directions hearing held on 20 December 2011 at the Coroners Court of Victoria in Melbourne. The order prohibits the publication of any information which may identify a nine-day-old baby boy or his mother. Until further order of the court, any publication or broadcast by any means of radio, television or other means, may only refer to the infant as Baby Oscar and his mother as Baby Oscar's mother. | COR 2009 3369 | Co Sleeping Deaths | Non-Publication Order | Coroner John Olle | On Monday 3 October 2011, Coroner John Olle made a non publication order in relation to the deaths of five infants who died in a co-sleeping setting. Coroner Olle made an order suppressing the full names of each of five infants but allowed them to be identified by their first names. He made a further order that the full names of the infants parents and carers were not to be published.
