Technology at the Court
The Coroners Court of Victoria is committed to implementing technology to improve court user access and efficiencies in Court processes.
Online Hearings
Hearings at the Court, including inquests, often proceed through a hybrid model of in person and online hearing access.
The Court utilises Webex to facilitate online access to hearings. Information on Webex access for interested parties and court users can be found here.

AI pilot program
In March 2024, the Court initiated a pilot program to identify and explore workflows and tasks within the Court that could be improved or enhanced with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI) with a focus on ethical use and staff wellbeing.
The bespoke pilot program is centred on reducing the impact of vicarious trauma on the Court workforce by utilising AI to remove or redact distressing images that staff do not need to view. It also explored the possibility of using AI to review very large documents to identify key pieces of information; supporting coroners, solicitors and case investigators to analyse and review case material more efficiently.
The program aims to support staff rather than remove human oversight and has the potential to significantly reduce staff exposure to confronting material and time spent on repetitive administrative tasks.
In conducting this work the Court has considered and applied guidance from a range of sources, including the Victorian Government and Court Services Victoria, regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence in legal practice.
All pilot testing will occur on a secure, isolated system with no private data passed to other entities. The Court continues to evaluate the project’s effectiveness, exploring responsible expansion while prioritising ethical considerations and stakeholder engagement throughout the process.
